Chapter Seven

After tossing and turning all night, Drake was all jumbled up. He was a man of action, used to making quick decisions he could live by. Giving a problem time was not in his nature.

And neither was being deceitful.

He strolled into the stables, hoping to steal a moment’s peace. For most of his life he had spent day after day on horseback, except for the occasional miserable train ride. Now his days were filled with repairs, avoiding a beautiful redhead, and occasionally riding to town. He missed his time in the saddle, but not enough to sacrifice his time with Michaela.

The soft sound of a feminine hum wafted down the aisle. His loins instantly reacted. No woman had ever affected him the way Michaela had. Sure, he found pleasure in women, but he was never drawn to one like he was drawn to Michaela. In the past, women were there to satisfy his needs. Once satisfied, he moved on. There was no desire for anything deeper.

How could one woman change that in a matter of days?

Not wanting to startle her, he strolled to where she was readying one of the horses, a pretty palomino. “Where are you going?”

Michaela whipped around on a giggle. “Oh, oh….” She placed on hand on her chest, breathing heavy.

“I didn’t mean to…it’s just… you were humming and…” Damn it to hell, it was hard making conversation with this woman. He inhaled deeply. “You going out to town?”

Her face flushed, she turned her attention back to the horse, speaking over her shoulder. “No. It is such a fine day. I thought I would go for a ride. Aunt Carol has predicted that the weather is going to be turning soon.” She turned toward Drake. “She’s been saying that for weeks now. I suppose one of these days, her forecast will prove correct.”

“And when it does, I’m certain Aunt Carol will remind everyone that she predicted the weather with accuracy.” Drake had only lived on the ranch a short time, but he already knew these people as if they were family.

Michaela let out a hearty laugh. “I’m sure she will.”

“Mind if I join you?” The words sprung from his mouth out of nowhere. Wasn’t he just sayin’ he should be avoiding the beautiful redhead until he had his plan in place? But that was just it. He didn’t have a plan. He wasn’t angling for information; all he wanted to do was spend some time with her, get to know her.

“No, not at all.” She worried her bottom lip with uncertainty, her words belying her certainty.

He made quick work of saddling the horses and off they went, galloping down the trail as if nothing awkward happened.

Drake inhaled the crisp Montana air. This is what his dream smelled like—wide open space, the sounds of nature all around, and a beautiful woman by his side. Only she wasn’t his. Yet.

As Drake slowed his horse to a walk, Michaela drew up beside him.

“Is something the matter?” Her sweet voice broke through his musings.
